Heli Max 1SQ RTF Quadcopter Review

The Heli Max 1SQ may be small but it is so much fun to fly. I have had very little flying experience but this quad copter has proven to be an excellent trainer. The most important thing in a quad copter as a beginner is its durability. While learning with any quad copter crashes are inevitable. The Heli Max 1SQ fits this need perfectly. It is a tough little copter. Indoors or outdoors it can take several crashes without catastrophic results. One hint I can give you that will keep the 1SQ in perfect flying shape is to kill the power just before crash impact and very little if any damage will occur.


Even though the Heli Max 1SQ is very durable and rigid enough for the beginner, I need to mention that this quad copter is ideal for the teenage and older pilot. I only say that because of the sensitivity of the copter, even on the lowest sensitivity setting. It flies smoothly and hovers predictably but requires a delicate touch and smooth movements by the pilot. That can be tough for the youngest pilots to maintain such precise movements. But it is great for the teenage and above group. The speed and responsiveness of the Heli Max 1SQ makes it a lot of fun to fly.

The 1SQ quad copter came ready to fly out of the box. Charge the LiPo battery and you are ready for the air. Even though this isn’t a big deal it was pretty cool that the 4 “AA” batteries for the transmitter were included. Also it came with an extra set of blades. Another nice feature was the USB charger. You can even charge batteries with a laptop or tablet on the go or just charge it with a personal computer at home. I would suggest an extra battery or two for more flying time, and maybe even an extra USB battery charger. I can get 10 minutes flying time on a single charge but that is pretty conservative flying. If you plan to fly aggressively then you can expect anywhere from 5 – 10 minutes flight time. Depending on how many extra batteries and extra chargers you buy, you could almost fly constantly.

The Heli Max 1SQ is small. Just under six inches square is what it measures. It is also very light at just 1.1 ounces.  Even as small and light as it is, there is no problem flying outdoors in light wind. It is quite powerful to be so small, however, the payload capacity is extremely small and would not be enough for a camera or anything like that. The price range is a little higher than most entry level quad copters but you could also pay a lot more for copters that would not perform as well as the 1SQ. Sturdiness and rigidity are definitely the strong point on the Heli Max 1SQ.  It is amazing how indestructible the 1SQ is, and that feature in and of itself makes this quad copter a great trainer.

Badboy Quadcopter With Camera v959 Review

A few months back, I was looking for an entry level radio controlled helicopter or quad copter that had the video camera capabilities. When I ran across the Badboy v959 quad copter I found just what I was looking for. In my research, I found that a copter with an on board camera that is capable of capturing still pictures as well as video can be quite expensive. The v959 was an inexpensive option for me to not only learn to fly but also learn the mechanics of the camera for overhead photography and video.

The camera makes the Badboy v959 an enjoyable quad copter to have. Whether you choose to just goof off with the aerial camera or you have a specific purpose for the camera it is an awesome feature. Before discussing the camera too much I need to discuss the flying features and capabilities of the v959.

badboy cameraFirst of all, the Badboy v959 quad copter will get about 7 – 10 minutes of flight time on a full battery charge. Keep in min the batteries take anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours to charge. That means you are going to need some extra batteries if you want to fly more than 7 – 10 minutes at a time. I personally would suggest a minimum of two extra batteries for a total of three. That would give you 21 – 30 minutes of solid flight time. Another bit of information for you is that the camera use does have an impact on battery consumption.

Secondly, the rigidity of the v959 is another of its good features. This quad copter is small but can withstand multiple crashes and keeps on going strong. One very important thing to remember about crashes is to cut the power to the rotors prior to impact. This will greatly reduce damage because the rotors would be free spinning without load and thereby minimize rotor damage. It does come with a complete set of replacement blades just in case they get damaged in a crash.

badboy remoteThe transmitter takes 6 “AA” batteries (not included) and is a very capable 2.4MHz transmitter. One really nice feature of the transmitter is that the camera can be activated for still images or video directly from the transmitter. The camera takes a Micro SD memory card to store its images or videos. A 2 GB memory card is provided with the v959 but you can put your own 4 GB card in it for expanded memory. The video quality is much better than expected.

Badboy frontOne thing for sure is that the Badboy v959 is a fun quad copter to have. The price point is low considering what you get for the price. This is such a great entry level first person video copter that it would be hard to pass up if that’s what you are looking for. It is tough and rugged enough to be a beginner flight trainer, yet, the camera that is features represents the true purpose of the v959.

Syma X1 RC Quadcopter UFO Review

Overall I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience with the Syma X1 UFO model quad copter. A great deal of people have reported feedback that the UFO is a great starter quad copter and I tend to agree with that evaluation. The primary reason I consider the X1 UFO model as a good starter quad copter is because of how durable and sturdy it is, which comes in handy on the first flight attempts. When you are learning to fly, you will crash; and the fact of crashes early on is inevitable. Another reason I believe the X1 as a perfect starter quad copter is the inexpensive price point. Also a high number of people regarded the X1 UFO model as a beginners model because of it’s ability to fly indoors as well as out. You will want to be really careful indoors because the blades can scratch walls if you run into them.

Syma X1 with Controller UFOAlthough it has been reviewed as a starter copter, it is also regarded as an enjoyable RC quad copter for even the advanced of RC pilots. In addition to the features that make it a great beginner, the agility and responsiveness in the air make it good for the experienced users. The maneuverability is handles very well and is stable enough for my children, but the 360 flips and rolls are satisfying even for the advanced RC pilot.

UFO close upI have a few suggestions for making the experience with the Syma X1 UFO quad copter more enjoyable. The first thing you need to do is to go ahead and purchase additional LiPo batteries to have one charging while flying with the other. The charge time can be as long as 65 – 75 minutes and the flight time is roughly 7 – 8 minutes. It’s easy to see that additional batteries can make the X1 UFO much  more enjoyable.

One caution to take was the steps needed to be taken when first turning the X1 UFO on. A specific order must be followed for proper gyro calibration and the binding of the transmitter to the quad copter.  The key is to make sure the X1 UFO is sitting on a flat and even surface before turning the copter on. Flight stability can be severely hampered if this is not done properly.  The payload capacity of the X1 UFO model quad copter is enough to add a lightweight key chain camera to more increase its capabilities.

UFO 360All in all the Syma X1 UFO quad copter provided a delightful flight experience. The X1 UFO is  a dependable, capable, and inexpensive option for a radio controlled flying machine. It is also sturdy enough to withstand the potential crashes that come with learning to fly. The highest percentage of feedback has been positive and my experience goes right along with the reviews I read.  This X1 is an awesome quad copter for beginners and experienced fliers alike.

BLADE mQX BNF Quadcopter Review

The Blade MQX BNF quad copter is a great option for the beginner but is possibly more suited to the intermediate RC pilot. The BNF option means Bind – N – Fly.  The BNF model does not include a transmitter. I happen to own the Spektrum Dx6i transmitter which was able to bind perfectly with the Blade MQX. I’m not going to say much about the specific transmitter because the Blade MQX is compatible with any 4+ channel DSM2 or DSMX transmitter. Having to provide a transmitter separately is primarily why the BNF version of the Blade MQX is for intermediate pilots. The BNF version is designed for transmitter owners so they do not have to pay extra for a transmitter that they do not need.


The Blade MQX BNF version comes with the quad copter, a Li-Po battery, and battery charger. Out of the box the battery needed charging and the copter needs binding to the transmitter I used. Flying out of the box was a real treat. Very easy to fly outdoors. It can be flown indoors also but I would be careful inside. The reason I say that is because of the speed at which the Blade MQX zips around. That makes flying in a small room difficult but a good challenge for experienced pilots. Outside is where you can see how fast this quad copter can be as well as how the Blade MQX handles.

There is a special artificial stabilization 3 – axis system built into the MQX. This allows the pilot a sense of precise control that is often only found in much more costly models. It seems no matter the conditions that the Blade MQX can be flown with stability and precision.

Even though the Blade MQX is a smaller sized quad copter it is rigid and plenty sturdy enough in the event of a crash or an accident. Also there are many parts and accessories readily available for the MQX just in case your MQX sustains damage or eventual failure of any part. It is nice to know that parts are available from motors to blades.

Flight times are around 7 minutes to as high as 10 minutes. I would suggest buying several additional batteries. At least enough to be able to fly continuously for 30 minutes or so. The payload capacity is enough to support a small camera. It is also enough to support a small available light if you wanted to fly in the dark.

The Blade MQX is a great quad copter. It is reliable and sturdy, fast and responsive to the transmitter you might choose. The price point is great for an intermediate level quad copter. The transmitter you choose and the options it provides can improve the flight experience of the MQX. As the Blade MQX comes in the BNF option, it is a great quad copter that will provide hours and hours of entertainment.

Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt Quadcopter Review

Trying out the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt I realized one very important thing. This quad copter is one of the easiest to learn how to fly. The one button stunts are awesome. Flips, barrel rolls, and 180 degree flips are all possible with a minimum of flight instruction and training. I’m not saying the tricks and stunts are easy but the one button function certainly makes these tricks open to everyone.


The Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt is made of crash resistant materials with the rotors completely shrouded in and protected by a sturdy Styrofoam shell. While this does prevent straight on damage to the rotors and the props you may want to be careful of direct hits on the corners of the Styrofoam housing. It can crack and break in severe crashes. It can be easily mended with glue but I am just making sure you are aware of that possibility. Sturdiness is a necessity with all the trick capabilities with the Helix X4 Stunt. The lightweight frame that surrounds the rotors and props also protects interior walls and furniture when flying indoors. Open rotor copters can tend to scratch walls when crashing into them and you don’t have that worry with the Helix X4.

I will make somewhat of a warning here before discussing the stunt capabilities of the Air Hogs Helix X4.  Make sure you are outdoors or in a very large room while trying to learn to do stunts. It does take a good but of room to perform flips and barrel rolls, you want to make sure you have reaction time to re-stabilize the Helix X4 when coming out of a trick move. Once you learn how to fly the basics you will be able to do the tricks and stunts by pressing the red button on the transmitter. The Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt is unbelievably user friendly. Steering seems to be much easier in expert mode as opposed to the novice mode so keep that in mind as you learn to fly.

Another definite positive for the Air Hogs Helix X4 is the battery time. The Helix X4 comes with one battery and a USB charger. You get about 6 – 8 minutes from one charge and it only takes about 20 minutes to recharge. I do recommend an extra battery or two so you can fly all you want with fresh recharged batteries. The batteries can be charged via any USB port on a PC at home or laptop on the go.

The Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt comes ready to fly once the battery is charged. The transmitter also needs 8 “AA” batteries to get you started. No trim adjustment is available or even necessary. The Air Hogs Helix X4 has gyro stabilization that eliminated the oftentimes confusing trim controls. That change helped make the Helix X4 Stunt easier to use. The transmitter is a 2.4GHz four channel controller that provides good range when flying outside. All in all the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt is a great entry level quad copter and the stunts are a great bonus.

There is nothing you need to fly the Traxxas QR-1 Quad rotor RTF that does not come in the box that it is delivered in. Open the box, charge the Li-Po battery for the quad copter, and this thing is ready to fly. It even comes with the batteries for the transmitter. Everything is included to fly immediately. It also comes in many color options to personalize the copter.

The Traxxas QR-1 is an awesome little quadcopter. It measures just a little over 4.5 inches square. The design is small but it is able to withstand a great deal of punishment from beginning pilot’s first flight attempts. Crashes are inevitable when learning to fly any quad copter and the Traxxas is more than able to withstand the crashes. Not to mention the parts and accessories for the Traxxas QR-1 are readily available and easy to get. Traxxas also has an exclusive Helicopter Replacement Plan. You can trade in your QR-1 at any time, and in any condition, and purchase a new model (transmitter not included) for just half the list price of the ready-to-fly QR-1. That is a pretty good warranty and very customer friendly.

The transmitter is a 2.4 GHz radio control that offers great range. Also the copter and the transmitter bind each time the transmitter is powered on. There is a normal and expert mode that can be switched from one to the other right from the transmitter. Trim adjustments are also made directly from the transmitter and the adjustments are made easier by a LCD display on the transmitter itself.

The Traxxas QR-1 comes with two Li-Po batteries. Each battery allows for a maximum of 10 minutes flight time and can be changed out with very little effort. The battery charger that comes with the quad copter is powered by a USB port and is capable of charging two batteries at once. There is also an LED indicator that lets you know when the battery is charged. I advise getting and extra 2 batteries so you could always have two charging and flight could be nearly continuous. Just plug the charger into the computer or laptop and in 30 – 40 minutes you are in business with two charged batteries.

Flips and rolls are more than possible with the Traxxas QR-1. I must warn you that it can take some time and some training to be able to successfully master the tricks and stunts. Lots of outdoor space is required to acquire and hone the skill needed to perform aerobatics with this quad copter. It is capable but you just have to be patient in learning to prevent crashes.

Since the Traxxas QR-1 comes ready to fly and with an outstanding warranty in place, it is hard to imagine going wrong with this quad copter as your choice. It is highly capable and very advanced in its possibilities. Be patient and learn stable flight before advancing to the flips and stunts.

All of the necessary tuning has been carried out and the flight parameters and functions have been set up. This means that every preparation needed to get the quadcopter ready for flight has already been done by the manufacturers. So, other than a few minor attachments (such as the battery and propellers), the DJI Phantom is pretty much ready to flight straight out of the box.

Attractive design:

The Phantom is visually stunning, with a streamlined, modern look. The design is compact, making it easy to pack up and transport your quadcopter.

Easy to fly:

The DJI Phantom is often the first choice for beginners as it has many functions that make flying a quadcopter easier than it is with some of its competitors:

– Built-in Naza-M + GPS system: this is an autopilot system which provides stability and reliability  for a great overall flight performance.

The phantom offers two levels of voltage protection, the first one being that the LED indicator flashes a warning that the battery is low. If this is not responded to, the second level triggers the quadcopter to land automatically.

Remote Control Unit:

The Phantom comes equipped with a remote control and receiver. The control is effective for anywhere up to 300m (which is obviously dependant on the environment and flying conditions). The remote has a frequency hopping, interference-free design which allows multiple controls to be used at the same time, providing a more reliable remote communications link.

Camera Mount for GoPro:

The DJI Phantom comes with an external, removable camera mount for your GoPro camera (or any other light camera) or for other video equipment.

The Bumblebee 550 Quadcopter Kit fits together easily and requires minimal assembly. All you need to do is attach a few screws and put together the frame, which will take minutes. It is so simple that you don’t even need to refer to the instruction manuals to get the job done.

Everything about the Bumblebee 550 quadcopter kit exhibits superiority, from the sturdy, well-designed frame to the additional up-grade features and gadgets you can buy. Manufactured to a very high standard, everything fits together incredibly well and the overall impression is that the Bumblebee is a quality product. However, at the same time, this quadcopter kit is undeniably very good  value for money.

Made with strong carbon fibre and durable, plastic parts, the Bumblebee is tough and able to hold its own, even during crashes or when hitting the ground hard. It’s high quality production and well-made, reliable equipment ensures that the Bumblebee 550 quadcopter is smooth when in flight and very stable on landing. Having said that, accidents do happen and if necessary, spares and repairs are all readily available to purchase.

tandard, but these have been known to explode when at full throttle or break when the Bumblebee is flying through the air. An alternative is to buy more advanced propellers, but before doing so, you would need to switch the motors.

Additional items can be fitted to enhance and strengthen the Bumblebee’s performance, such as a multi-rotor control board, receivers or lighting. One nice little touch is that all electronic equipment is  hidden away in the fuselage and topped with a stylish black dome; thus keeping the Bumblebee’s appearance tidy, sleek and impressive.

Another useful feature on the Bumblebee 550 quadcopter kit is the landing skids:  they are quite tall, allowing adequate space and plenty of clearance from the ground to mount a camera. The camera allows you to capture breath-taking views in  the form of either photos or videos and to help improve the image quality, a gimbal mount is also available.


Another useful extra that you can attach to the mount is an  Electronic Speed Controller. This varies the speed and direction of the Bumblebee, which in turn enhances the enjoyment and versatility of the quadcopter kit.

One problem identified is that the landing gear is not particularly strong. The lower plastic skid grips are rather brittle and can easily snap when put under duress, such as during a tough landing. However, additional landing gear equipment is available to supplement the existing gear. Sometimes, it seems that the centre of gravity is a little too much at the top of the Bumblebee and this can cause the quadcopter kit to flip over, especially on landing.

Another major problem is that the bolts for the motor mounts are too long, resulting in the bolts actually touching the copper windings in the motor. This can cause the motors to short-circuit and fail to start. However, once identified, this problem is easily rectified by using washers, filing down the bolts to the appropriate length or just use shorter bolts.

Conclusion:  While it’s not particularly too difficult to assemble; on the order of 1-5, five being the most difficult, it’s on average a two or so.  The problem with the Bumblebee is that because damage can inflicted so easily on it, you’ll find yourself always waiting for replacement parts.  That’s easily time spent not flying the quadcopter kit.

But overall it’s a great quadcopter kit that you can customize to your liking.  Add a GPS?  No Problem.  Add a camera swivel?  Not an issue.   Don’t get this if you don’t want to dirty your hands.  For a kit out of the box, you can get either a DJI Phantom or an AR Parrot.   But for an epic customization that you can make your own, this is your bird.  Check out another enthusiast’s Bumblebee 550 quadcopter and tell me you don’t find that cool.  ;)

What is a RC Quadcopter?

A RC quadcopter is an aircraft that falls into the category of multi-rotor (or rotor-craft that has more than two blades) and is very similar to a RC helicopter. The main difference (and its most noticeable feature) is that the quadcopter has, as the name suggests, four rotors. The helicopter traditionally has a single main rotor, with an anti-torque tail rotor (the quadcopter does not have a tail rotor).

It seems that the RC quadcopter is now becoming more popular than its helicopter counterpart and there are several reasons for this. Firstly, the quadcopter usually has fewer moving parts and has a much less complex operation than the helicopter. Another thing is that the quadcopter is generally easier to fly than a helicopter: The helicopter often struggles in high wind and is tricky to land where, in contrast, the quadcopter is somewhat insensitive to wind and lands with relative ease. The quadcopter is also very stable due to the four rotors and a sensitive, modern electronics system which gives greater control of the quadcopter. Another important factor is that quadcopters are simpler to build and they are easier (and cheaper) to repair.

The RC Quadcopter consists of three main mechanical components which are the frame (the integral core which joins the other parts of the quadcopter together), four motors and propellers (one on each motor). As well as mechanical there are also electrical components and these are the Electronic Speed Control (ESC), controller board, battery and of course, the remote control. An interesting twist in some of the newer quadcopters is that they are controlled via a smart-phone or a tablet.

Modern technology ensures that additional features and functions are constantly being added to quadcopters, such as a mount for a GoPro camera and integrated GPS systems.

The RC quadcopter is able to fly in all directions, can hover and take off vertically. Two of the quadcopter’s rotors move in an anti-clockwise position, while the other two move clockwise. All four rotors are set to spin at different speeds and this allows the aircraft to complete all kinds of movements (rolling, tilting, turning and hovering). Control over the quadcopter’s motion is attained by changing and altering the pitch and rotation or one (or more) of the rotors.

As we have already ascertained, these are exciting times for RC quadcopters, so it stands to reason that they are becoming increasingly popular with the hobbyist community. However, the increased interest and use of quadcopters is not limited to enthusiasts: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (also known as UAVs) are aircraft that do not have a human pilot on board, such as the quadcopter. These are regulaly used for research, surveillance and military work. They are presently conducting extensive research into possibly being able to use quadcopters (that are capable of autonomous flight) to  substitute humans in dangerous scenarios. For example, being used in the emergency services such as the police or fire-brigade, perhaps even preventing the loss of human life.

Carbon Propellers:

There are several reasons for this, the first being that they are much lighter than the originals. They are made with the sturdier carbon fibre which does not bend, unlike the standard propellers. The carbon fibre propellers are also quieter and offer a smoother flight, even reducing the “jello effect” when filming which is caused by vibrations. The carbon propellers offer more stability and control, reducing the amount of bouncing on the air during quick manoeuvres, such as ascents and descents. Anti-Vibration Anti-Jello Vibration Isolator Carbon Mount:

Spare Battery:

DJI BatteryAs amazing as the DJI quadcopter is, one thing that is a little frustrating is how short the battery life is when the aircraft is in flight. It seems that no sooner have you taken off, then it is time to bring the aircraft back down to the ground. The average amount of time in the air is usually no more than ten minutes, with this time being reduced  if you are using a camera to film or take pictures. Therefore,  it makes perfect (and practical) sense to buy one or two spare batteries. All you need to do is keep the spare batteries charged up and take them with you when you go out flying. Propeller Guards:
